Brand new user of the tool. I am using the desktop app from the Chrome Web Store.
Would someone kindly explain how to get the DataStoreReference Icon (available in the online demo) into the desktop apps palette.

The desktop app is outdated and does not contain some features, available in the online demo.
You could give the Camunda Modeler a try which packages our tools in an up-to-date manner.
