I vote to keep the space tool activated after an operation which uses it (And then deactivate it explicitely - as already implemented with either clicking on the space tool symbol or hitting the ESC key).
I continously find myself needing it several times - for different reasons. E.g. I want to have space in both vertical and horizontal directions. Or I cannot estimate the space I need correctly and need two attempts.
